People from around the world come to Shirdi to see Sai Baba, the god of all. This small village in India is famous because people from the Hindu and Muslim faiths visit it.
Throughout history, all religious groups including orthodox Christians and Zoroastrians have worshipped Sai Baba of Shirdi.
Shree Sai Baba was born in the year 1835 to a Brahmin couple in Patna which was in the British Indian Nizam state.
There are many communities that claim to have Baba, but none of them have proven it.
One of Sai Baba's earliest memories was at the age of sixteen going to a village called Shirdi for the first time. When he arrived, people were amazed looking at him meditating uninterruptedly for many days under a tree in an asana (energy seat). They also grew curious about this very young boy. Eventually, Bayajabai, the wife of the village chief, came and enquired about his well-being. Baba started treating her like his mother. One day Mhalspati, the village chief and an archpriest possessed by the spirit of lord Shiva Khandoba uttered, 'There is a holy spirit here'.
Baba pointed to the neem tree and asked that they dig it up. Once they started digging, they found a slab made of stone, oil lamps burning without oil, and space without air-which was completely different from science. In the same space, they found a vessel which is in the shape of a cow's mouth on a wooden table. Baba clarified that this is the holy place where his guru did penance. He also suggested that instead of worshiping him, worship the tree and let it stay as it is. To this day no one has touched it. This is the first stop for all pilgrims in Shirdi (India).
Baba was a unique personality who garnered great attention, both during the day and throughout the night. He associated with no one and feared no one. Some people thought he might be insane or even abuse him by throwing stones at him. Baba spent about three years at Shirdi; after that period, for one year Baba left Shirdi, and very little was known about Sai Baba during that time. He met many saints, and fakirs, and even worked as a weaver as history suggests.
In 1858, Baba returned to Shirdi permanently. For about five years of time, Baba took refuge under a nearby neem tree. He was also often seen wandering in the jungle near Shirdi and spent much of this time in meditation. Gradually, he shifted his accommodation to a nearby mosque. Visitors from both Hindu and Muslim faiths were visiting Baba here. Here in the mosque, he tended the sacred fire, often called a dhuni. Baba gave ash to all visitors as many believe that ash is the best medicine for any illness.
Baba used to cook and serve food to all the devotees who would come to visit. His favorite hobby was singing religious songs and dancing. It wasn't long before visitors started coming in droves upon hearing of his reputation.
Baba was opposed to orthodoxy in Hinduism, Christianity, and Islam. He asked that his followers lead an ordinary life. He encouraged them to chant the holy words, say the names of God, and read their respective scriptures. Baba followed all Hindu rituals and allowed Muslims to perform Namaz or read the Quran at festival times.
One of his well-known epigrams is Sabka Malik Ek hai.
Baba always encouraged charity and shared the happiness of sharing.
If any creature comes to you for help, don't drive them away and treat them well.
Give water to the thirsty, food to the hungry, and allow a stranger to take accommodation in your verandah.
If someone asks you for money and you are not inclined to give, don't give but don't bark at him.
Baba always said to love every living being without any discrimination.
He advised perfect loyalty and faith in the power and blessings of the Almighty (ALLAH MALIK) and patience for the results of action (KARMA).
Baba's Divine Love and blessings are showered directly and not through any intermediary.
